Artwork Description

In this evocative drawing, Agustin Noguera captures the haunting image of a street child behind bars. The subject’s hair is depicted as a mass of black spikes, symbolising both the darkness of their circumstances and the defensive posture required for survival on the streets. These spikes serve as a visual metaphor for the harsh realities faced by children forced to fend for themselves in unforgiving urban environments.

The child’s eyes are the focal point of the piece, rendered large and deep, conveying a gaze that is both penetrating and unsettling. Noguera has imbued the eyes with an almost psychotic intensity, reflecting the trauma and hardship experienced by the young subject. The artist’s skilful use of pencil on paper brings a raw, immediate quality to the work, enhancing its emotional impact.

The drawing ends abruptly at the neck, a compositional choice that emphasises the face and its powerful expression, leaving the viewer to contemplate the untold story of the body and life beyond the frame.

Artist’s Inspiration

This artwork stems from a profound childhood memory that has stayed with Agustin Noguera throughout his life. As a young boy, he accompanied his mother, a lawyer, to a police station. There, he witnessed a distressing scene: a child his own age, imprisoned for selling candy on the streets—an act of survival criminalised by local authorities.

The stark contrast between his own life of relative privilege and the harsh reality faced by the imprisoned child left an indelible mark on Noguera. He recalls the feeling of helplessness as he watched the other boy from across the bars, unable to comprehend the injustice or offer any help despite his mother’s professional status.

This early exposure to social inequality and the criminalisation of poverty has fuelled Noguera’s artistic expression and social conscience. Through this piece, he seeks to shed light on the plight of street children in Mexico and around the world, forcing viewers to confront uncomfortable truths about societal failures in protecting the most vulnerable.

Artist’s Commitment

Agustin Noguera has pledged to donate the proceeds from the sale of this artwork to foundations in Mexico dedicated to helping street children. This commitment reflects the artist’s desire to move beyond mere representation of social issues to actively contributing to their resolution, using his art as a vehicle for tangible change.

This artwork serves as a powerful reminder of the ongoing struggles faced by street children. Through his work, Noguera invites viewers to reflect on these complex social issues and consider their own role in fostering positive change. The piece not only stands as a striking visual commentary but also as a catalyst for action, bridging the gap between artistic expression and social responsibility.
